Wearable Tech
There has been a lot of talk about wearable technology, and this week at Europe’s IFA tech conference, Samsung introduced us to the Galaxy Gear smartwatch. The smartwatch is capable of making and receiving phone calls using voice control, sending and receiving SMS texts and snapping “visual memos” with a its memographer, an outward facing camera. It’s not designed as a new standalone product, but instead it will work as a companion device for existing Samsung phones and tablets.
Chip maker Qualcomm also introduced their Toq smartwatch this week and Apple is expected to announce their much anticipated smartwatch at their September 10th event.
More Smartphones
It wouldn’t be a product announcement season without a slew of new smartphones to put on our holiday wishlists. The offerings this season include a range of budget iPhones from Apple and to an even larger “Phablet” (phone tablet) from Samsung.
- Now in its third iteration, Samsung’s popular Note “phablet” received several updates including a larger screen, new features for its S-pen stylus and a thinner profile.
- At their September 10th event, Apple is expected to announce the next version of their iPhone 5, the 5S as well as a new, budget-friendly option in the 5C. Both will run the long-anticipated IOS7 software. The 5C is expected to come in a variety of bright colors, while the 5S will come in black, white and gold.
- Offerings from Sony and Nokia aim to prove that smartphones can have great cameras as well as great features. The Nokia 1020 runs the Windows Phone operating system and boasts a 41 megapixel camera while Sony’s Android-run Xperia Z1 packs a 20.7 megapixel camera in an aluminum case.
Reading is Fun, again
Despite the abundance of tablets on the market today, e-readers are still popular. Their e-ink displays, light profiles and ability to last weeks on a single charge, make them ideal for reading while traveling, or just relaxing.
- In late summer, Amazon began depleting their supply of the Kindle Paperwhite, indicating something new was on the horizon. While official information hasn’t been provided yet, Amazon has announced that the next generation Paperwhite will have “the highest contract ever” and will be 25% faster.
- Kobo, a major player in the e-reader space, has announced new “luxury” e-readers, the Aura and the Aura HD.
- Barnes and Noble is also expected to announce new Nook devices this fall.
